Day 4 |
THE WAITING GAME |
|
|
"Rest in the Lord and wait patiently for him: fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass." Psalm 37:7 |
|
Saul's servants seeing the distress of the king recommend a musician to calm his shattered nerves and fevered thoughts - David the shepherd boy; David the future king of Israel (1 Sam. 16:15-23). He enters the presence of the king and no sign or word suggests that he is anything but a loyal subject. It is a remarkable commentary on David. Later he hears of Goliath's challenge when visiting his brothers who are in the king's service. He faces the uncouth opponent with courage and the confidence of a man who knows God is on his side. He is victorious but still no boastful word is heard from him (1 Sam. 17:47). In all he did David gave faithful service to his king (1 Sam. 18:5), even after his praise was sung publicly, Saul became jealous of him (1 Sam. 18:6-9) and tried to kill him (v 10-14). David made no move to usurp Saul's position or establish his own authority. Today our little boy wanted a drink and he called out in the car on the way home, laughing, " and I want it now if not sooner, please." He was using my own phrase back to me! I find waiting difficult whether it's for a bus, a birthday, or for Michael to come to me to get ready to go out. David's training out in the fields taught him how to wait patiently. |

|
How good are you at waiting? David wrote today's discover text
from Psalm 37 as a old man but the lesson was learned when he
was young. Waiting under difficult conditions was his royal
training and God moved only as fast as was right for David and
his people. Look up Psalm 33:18-20, Isaiah 40:27-31 and Micah
7:7.

Father, you have my life in your hands. Help me to trust and wait patiently for you to unfold your will for me. |
