Day 7

SERVING GOD OR SERVING SELF?

"So Saul died for his transgression which he committed against the Lord, even against the word of the Lord, which he kept not, and also for asking counsel of one that had a familiar spirit, to enquire of it; and he enquired not of the Lord: therefore he slew him, and turned the kingdom unto David the son of Jesse." 1 Chron. 10:13,14

We noted at the beginning of Saul's story his surprising ignorance of Samuel. It suggests he knew little of God either, even if he knew and understood something of the ritual of worship (1 Sam. 9:6 ; 14:35 ; 15:26). He began his reign in humility and learnt quickly because of specific blessings from God. But nowhere in the story is there any indication that Saul sought a deeper relationship with God or a fuller understanding of his will.

Ken and Elsie had been married for almost ten years. Both led busy lives but more and more Ken took on new responsibilities so that even when they were together he was preoccupied with them. Elsie tried time and again to show him that their relationship was being damaged by not sharing time and interests together. Rows became frequent until in frustration Ken shouted at his wife, "What is wrong with you? I don't know you any more." Showing him her packed suitcase Elsie said quietly, "The trouble is Ken, you never have."

Saul's story makes me tremble. He had every opportunity for a privileged relationship with God as he served as king yet he carried on in his own way as though he owed nothing to anyone. It reminds me of the story Jesus told in Matthew 25:14-30.

Saul reigned for forty years (1 Sam. 13:1) and under his leadership Israel was transformed from a collection of disunited tribes to a united nation. He won several notable battles yet despite his political and military success spiritually he lost his way. Are we in the same danger? Are we getting to know God and serving him or getting to know about him and serving ourselves?

My God don't let me ever fool myself into thinking that what I want is your will. Let me listen to you and truly follow your way.
