Day 3

WHAT IS TEMPTATION?

"But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members." Romans 7:23

When temptation hits us it often seems to be offering just what we want or need, a blessed escape from an overwhelming problem or a way of preserving our fragile pride. It may be subtle and soothing or sudden and over powering, enfolding our senses before the mind and will can react.

Look at the idea presented to Abraham Gen. 16:1-3 and the suggestion made to Joseph Gen. 39:6,7. See how Moses was so easily overcome Exodus 2:11,12. What about the forces working on Zacchaeus which gave rise to his words in Luke 19:26,27 or that made Ananias and Saphira defy God (Acts 5:1-4). The ideas which germinated in the minds of these people seemed so plausible, promised such inviting rewards. Look at the circumstances of each episode and you will see the great variety of temptations which the Devil can use!

What makes a temptation powerful?

  • First of all it involves an appeal to our emotions as well as our reason and these can be very powerful. Emotions are not wrong; God himself is emotional (Ex. 20:5,6; Zeph. 3:17; John 11:35) because of his involvement with his creation. We are like him but our emotions have been corrupted by sin.
  • Secondly, we know we are sinners and have given into temptation before. This knowledge robs us of confidence to reject temptation. We all have our particular weaknesses and Satan knows it! (Heb 12:1).
  • Thirdly we know who we are up against (Rev 12:10; 1 Pet. 5:8) If Adam and Eve fell how can we avoid it?
  • Finally when we see someone else succumb the ensuing self righteous attitude can be just what the Devil needs! See Romans 14:10-13.

My Lord, help me to swallow my pride in the face of temptation and ask you to deal with it for me.
